Ad Supported Cable Viewing In Wired Homes Continues to Grow (2000-2003)

Over the past few years, there has been a lot of talk about the decline in wired cable viewing because of the growth of ADS subscribers. These beliefs, however, have proven to be untrue. From 2000-2003, during primetime, cable delivery by quarter in wired cable homes has increased from the previous year every quarter. The same also holds true for total day viewing.

During primetime, the greatest gain in impressions was made during 2Q02 compared to year ago. Viewing increased by 17.3%. The greatest gain in total day viewing was also during this period. There was an increase of 17.6%.

On a yearly basis, there was a gain in total impressions each year for both primetime and total day. The greatest gain in impression for both primetime and total day was made in 2002 compared to year ago. The year 2003 had close to 22 million more wired cable impressions in primetime than 2000. On a total day basis, there was in increase of almost 14 million impressions.

From November 2000 through November 2003, there has been an increase of ADS subscribers of 6.2 million or 55%. Every six month interval in this time period has seen an increase in subscribers, but despite the steady growth, cable viewing for both primetime and total day in wired cable homes has grown at a solid pace.
