EDI Information
EDI, or Electronic Data Interchange is a mechanism of conducting business transactions from one computer to another using a standardized, context-sensitive format (i.e. each computer understands the “meaning” of each field without requiring additional human interpretation).
EDI offers several benefits to an organization, including:
- Reduced Labor Costs - In a paper-based world, one computer typically prints a document that is then sent (i.e. via mail, fax) to a trading partner where a human re-enters the information into a second computer system. EDI eliminates the need to re-enter this information, which greatly reduces data processing times.
- Timeliness of Information - Information is transferred much more quickly from one computer system to another using EDI than traditonal methods, which allows an organization to process more transactions in less time, thus increasing productivity and profit.
- Higher Quality Information - Typographic errors, which are often introduced when re-keying data can have significantly greater consequences than just the labor costs of reviewing and re-typing the data. EDI eliminates the need to re-key data, thus it increases the accuracy and overall quality of the information being processed.
- Improved Communications - EDI creates and relies on feedback systems to ensure that documents are actually delivered and received by the correct party. This can eliminate the need for follow-up phone calls as well as the emergency re-transmissions of documents, which saves both time and money.
- Standardization - EDI standardizes how information is presented and processed, which greatly reduces support costs once an EDI system is in place.
The following document contains the current version of TECC, the primary EDI standard used by the Cable Advertising industry and its vendors.

NOTE: The CAB is actively working with the American Association of Advertising Agencies to develop a new, cross-media EDI standard, which will likely replace the TECC and SpotXML standards in the not-to-distant future.
